Prologue of John’s Gospel
In the beginning the Word already existed.
The Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
He existed in the beginning with God.
God created everything through him,
and nothing was created except through him.
The Word gave life to everything that was created,
and his life brought light to everyone.
The light shines in the darkness,
and the darkness can never extinguish it.
As you read those lines, what comes to mind? Is it the description of “the Word”?
Maybe it’s the way these verses echo the very first chapter of the Bible, where God uses His words to bring everything into existence. Maybe you think of who the Word is.
The “Word”—or logos—was God’s expression, God’s creation, God’s incredible power.
The Word brought everything to life, and through it, God created everything. This passage that opens John’s gospel prepares us for what the Word would do next. The Word itself would come to life, in Jesus Christ, to bring us light and give us new life.
All God’s power, all of God’s holiness and light came to earth in that one man. For us. The Word, Jesus, was given to us, to you and me. Fulfilling God’s law, freeing us, and bringing us into His family.
How does it feel to know that the God who created everything, the source of light in the universe, the giver of life, did all that for you? God loved you and desired to be close to you from the beginning. You were part of God’s plan all along!
The world may not recognize Him, but it is our calling to reveal Him to the world. How will you reflect the light of God to the world around you?
