Read Matthew 12:22-37.

So much is happening in this small section of Scripture. Jesus teaches about division, fruit, and the importance of our words. He overpowers a demon and out-reasons the Pharisees. He reveals Himself more fully as the Messiah who will save the world, and He identifies us as key players in His eternal plan.
Matthew 12:30 really stuck with me: “Anyone who isn’t with me opposes me, and anyone who isn’t working with me is actually working against me.” I don’t fully understand why God has chosen to make us an important part of His rescue plan for this world, but He has. We are either for Him or against Him. There is no in-between.
I bet you never thought you were working against Jesus. I’m sure most people would never want to oppose the Kingdom of God. But, we so often do without even realizing it. The very words we speak have the power to build up and tear down people, families, and churches. They reveal the state of our heart and the disposition of our soul. Matthew 12:34 says, “For whatever is in your heart determines what you say.” Our words reveal our hearts to God and others.
If we added up the sum impact of our words from yesterday, would they be a force for evil or good? Would they bring life or death? Would they bring division or unity to our families, communities, and churches?
Far too often we tear down with our words. But the good news is that God’s mercies are new every morning. Each day is a new opportunity to build up and to speak life, unity, and love.
