Woman Taken in Adultery
Thousands of years ago, the prophet Isaiah wrote of You:
“A bruised reed he will not break,
and a dimly burning wick he will not quench;
he will faithfully bring forth justice.”
A bruised reed is damaged by abusive forces from the outside world, a burning wick is damaged by forces from within itself, but You are willing to destroy neither. Your justice is such that both are saved. You are gentle; You are compassionate; You are safe. You value Your creation even when creation does not value itself.
This woman was both bruised from without and burned from within, and religion called for her life to be broken and quenched. You did not minimize her sin nor ask her for a defense of her actions. But you bravely positioned Yourself between her and her condemners, refocusing their wrath on You. You saved her at great cost to Yourself-- these same stone-throwers would soon come for Your life.
Through this woman’s story, we discover a sacrificial expression of Your grace that brings forth life-giving justice. In response to such grace, You called her to a life of freedom: “Go and sin no more.”
By Your grace, let us do likewise.
