All Things are Possible to Him Who Believes
This passage is one of the clearest examples of the power of belief and prayer. It illustrates how belief in Jesus in the darkest valleys of the human experience can be much more challenging than when everything is going smoothly. When the boy’s father tells Jesus about the horrible situation with his son, he pleads to Jesus “have mercy on us and help us, if you can." While the boy’s father believes in Jesus, I think at the moment he failed to realize that Jesus doesn’t operate on our schedule. Rather, Jesus moves in our lives based on the His perfect timing.
The last couple lines of this passage demonstrate that prayer is a power far greater than any other. Before Jesus arrived and removed the evil spirit from the boy, the disciples had attempted to exorcize it, but they were successful. Afterward, back at the house with Jesus, the disciples asked, “Why couldn’t we cast out that evil spirit?” Jesus responded, “This kind can be cast out only by prayer.” Sometimes in life, we encounter obstacles and the only way we can move beyond them is by prayer.
